From Learner to Teacher: Mohammed Nur’s Inspiring Journey
Mohammed Nur, 20 years old Rohingya youth, has transformed his life through education and perseverance. Born in Myanmar, Nur, along with his parents and seven siblings (three brothers and four sisters) fled to Bangladesh in 2017 to escape violence and instability. Despite the hardships of displacement, he never lost sight of his dreams.
In 2018, Nur enrolled in Level-3 at “Onneson” Child Learning Center-4 under Camp-17, operated by Mukti Cox’s Bazar with the support of UNICEF. With dedication and determination, he excelled in his studies. When the Myanmar Curriculum Piloting was launched in 2021, he took a placement test and earned admission to Grade-7. His journey continued with remarkable success as he passed his Year-end assessments in 2023 and 2024, securing promotions to Grade-8 and Grade-9 respectively.
In 2024, Nur achieved another milestone- he was recruited as a Rohingya teacher at Onneson Child Learning Center-2 after successfully passing a recruitment test. While his new responsibilities as a teacher prevent him from continuing formal education, he remains committed to learning by privately continuing his studies.
Determined to be an effective educator, Nur actively participates in professional development. Since joining as a teacher, he has received training on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), Child Safeguarding and Disability Inclusion. Additionally, he regularly attends Teachers Learning Circles to enhance his teaching skills.
Nur envisions a future where he can make a lasting impact on his community. He shares, “I want to be a renowned teacher to educate my community.” His host teacher, Shamima Akter, expresses her pride in his achievements, stating, “As a teacher, my greatest reward is knowing that my efforts have helped my learner to make a difference.”
Nur’s story is a testament to the power of education and resilience. From a learner facing the uncertainties of displacement to a dedicated teacher shaping young minds, he embodies hope and inspiration for his community.
